Spreadsheet to Markdown Table

Turn tab-separated spreadsheet cells into an escaped Markdown table with a readable preview.

What this tool is for

Spreadsheet to Markdown Table helps you prepare a Markdown table from cells copied out of a spreadsheet. Processing happens in the current browser session, so the normal workflow does not require uploading the text to BiNotePads.

How to use Spreadsheet to Markdown Table

  1. Enter or paste the source data and keep an untouched copy when the order or formatting matters.
  2. Choose the available options, then select Process.
  3. Review the entire result before copying, downloading, publishing or importing it elsewhere.

Keep a pipe inside a table cell

Try this small sample before using your own text.

Before you use the output

The first row supplies headings and left alignment is selected. The vertical bar is escaped so it remains cell content. The preview shows the parsed values as text, not rendered user HTML. Uneven rows are padded and reported; if you copied commas rather than tabs, select a true spreadsheet cell range and copy again.

Copy cells, not a screenshot

Select a rectangular cell range in your spreadsheet and copy it as text. Columns should be separated by tabs. Paste the cells here, choose whether the first row contains headings, and select alignment. Try the example loads a two-column sample with a literal pipe in one value. Comma-separated CSV is a different format; this tool does not guess a separator.

Review the generated table

When the header option is off, Column 1, Column 2 and subsequent labels are generated. The widest record defines the width, and shorter records are padded with empty cells. The rows-padded statistic makes that adjustment visible. Quoted cells can contain tabs, doubled quotes or line breaks; malformed quoting is rejected instead of silently splitting the wrong cells.

Pipes, backslashes and common Markdown formatting characters are escaped. Raw angle brackets and ampersands become entities. Embedded line breaks become an explicit <br> marker. A receiving renderer that disallows inline HTML may display that marker differently. The local preview displays parsed cell values, rather than claiming to reproduce every Markdown engine.

Use the result in documentation

Copy the output or download the .md file and inspect it in your destination. Put a blank line before a table in a larger document. The preview is limited to 20 data rows, while the generated output includes all accepted rows. Spreadsheet styles, merged cells, formulas and cell types are not retained; copy ordinary display text and check identifiers and dates yourself.

Limits are 250,000 UTF-16 units, 5,000 records and 200 columns. The tool accepts pasted text, not an XLSX upload. See GitHub's table syntax guide for destination-specific syntax. Use List Comparison when you need membership differences instead of a table.

Common uses

Limits and accuracy

Use tab-separated text, not a complete XLSX file; merged cells, formulas, styles and spreadsheet formatting are not preserved. Keep the original text, verify important results and use a specialized application when a task carries legal, security, financial or production risk.

Privacy and safety

This tool is intended for ordinary text and development samples. Do not paste passwords, authentication tokens, private keys, payment information, medical records or confidential client data into a general-purpose web page. Closing or refreshing the page can remove unsaved input.

Can I use the result commercially?

You can use the transformed text in your own work, but you remain responsible for checking accuracy, rights, formatting and any platform-specific requirements.

Why can the result differ from another application?

Use tab-separated text, not a complete XLSX file; merged cells, formulas, styles and spreadsheet formatting are not preserved. Different applications can use different parsing, language and encoding rules.
